Going Green in the Black Country
Black Country Metal Works Ltd, suppliers of high end gift to the garden centre industry, have taken ‘going green’ very seriously.
Looking at how they could best ensure reduced negative impact and increased positive impact on their surroundings they instigated a multi faceted regime of measures.
As a company they design, manufacture, import and distribute a wide variety of Housewares, gifts and merchandisers. Potentially the local impact of any business with a high volume turnover can be troublesome with noise, transport, waste and omissions.
Black Country therefore brought in a set of rules for themselves to make the business a positive asset to the locality, but also to make the working conditions of staff and visitors more pleasant.
Primarily they have reduced noise pollution, reduced and in some cases eliminated omissions, reduced waste, limited unsightly outside storage, minimised vehicular journeys, become active participants within their local community, in this case the Coven Heath residents association, actively promoted equal opportunities for people, provided improved working surroundings for visitors and staff and proactively maintain their premises in sympathy with their surroundings.
Their outer and inner packaging had to change, taking them from plastic bubble wrap which protected their fragile giftware, to paper. Initially they were unsure as to how this would work, but it does and there are no increased breakages. All of their gift boxes are made from recycled and recyclable materials, showing that even high end specification presentation doesn’t suffer for ‘going green’.
Black Country will admit that it takes a positive attitude and a will to do it, “but” says Clive Knowles, “it’s not that hard and we benefit as much as everyone else”.
