Installation Guide- Butler Door Bells

If you wish to re-create an authentic period look in and out of your property, the Butler Bell is the perfect accessory. Our Butler Bell Door Kits feature either a polished brass or bright chrome bell and a classic bell pull which is to be situated outside of your home, creating a fantastic focal point and welcome to visitors whilst also providing an authentic ring.

Before you start to install your butler doorbell kit, we recommend speaking to a qualified tradesperson who will be able to fit or advise in the fitting of this product. Make sure you have your installation site marked out, both inside and outside and ensure you have enough cord for the space. However, be sure to not use more cord than necessary, as the tauter the cord, the better the bell pull will work and the more vigorously the bell will ring.

Step 3:
With the pull handle threaded through the brackets, you will need to attach an end cap.

Step 4:
Position the assembled pull handle at the desired location on the outside of your wall. It is important, at this stage, to make sure the proposed drill sites, are free from obstructions, so the pull cord can travel through with ease, both inside and outside the home.

Step 5:
Once the bell pull handle has been fixed into position, on the outside of your wall, unscrew the end cap nut and thread the pully cord through, tying a knot to anchor the cord from within.

Step 6:
Now the cord is secured, reattach the end cap nut and thread the cord over the pully bracket and through the house. It is best to use a thin crochet hook or something similar to pull the cord through.

Step 7:
Now the cord is through the house wall, thread it through the primary pulley and fix to the wall, making sure the pully is directly parallel to the pully bracket. The circular mounting bracket is designed to cover the drill hole, leading from the outside of the house. The head of the head rotates, so that it can be directed to the next pulley and bell.

Step 8:
Should you need to navigate a corner whilst installing the butlers bell, the angled bracket can be attached to ensure the continuation of the nylon cord, without any obstructions.

Step 9:
Place the bell directly on the wall and fix into place. Ensure the distance is far enough away from the last pulley so the cord remains taut.

Step 10:
Attach the cord to the bell, making sure the nylon is attached horizontally.

Step 11:
Check that your butler’s bell is working properly and a nice ringing sound is received.

Trouble Shooting:

If you get a poor ringing sound, please ensure that you have checked the following:

  • The cord is not wrapped around the pulley, it should simply just rest.
  • The cord is not too tight around between each pulley, just taut enough to ensure a good ring.

Iron door furniture requires little or as much care as you feel necessary. It does not corrode in the same way as other metals; it is however prone to cracking if dropped or knocked. Left untreated, it will naturally weather down and gain a further character with age. Should you wish to maintain the colour finish of your design we recommend an annual coat of a metal paint like Hammerite. Prior to this process please ensure the surface is clean, dry and any surface blemishes sanded down or smoothed. Should your property be located in near the coast or in an area of high pollution, similarly if the fitting is exposed to the elements we would recommend a bi-annual coat to keep it looking as good as new.
