Information Guide- Wall Light Terminology

Designed specifically for wall mounting, our collection of ‘Outdoor Wall Lights & Lanterns’ offers a huge selection of lights to add both style and illumination to any exterior space. Whether you’re looking to add a touch of historical charm with one of our traditional Victorian lanterns or you’re seeking something a little more modern to suit your contemporary property, our collection truly offers something for all personal tastes and preferences. But, with so many different designs on offer, which one should you choose? We’ve created this handy guide detailing the many design styles available in our range so that you can pick the perfect one for you. We’ve also added some extra advice over placement so that you can get the most out of your new wall light!

BRACKETS

Top-Fix Brackets: These are lights or lanterns that feature a bracket fitted to the top of the lumiere. These lights are ideal for placement above or beside a door or entryway, and also look great as standalone pieces fitted to an exterior shed or wall.

Bottom-Fix Brackets: These are lights or lanterns that feature a bracket fitted to the bottom of the lumiere. These lights are ideal for placement beside a door or entryway, or on the outer columns of a porch. They also work well fitted to an exterior shed or wall.

Bracketed Wall Lights

Corner Brackets: These are lights or lanterns that have been fitted with a bracket designed for corner fixing. These lights are ideal for fitting to the corner of a property, shed or garage space where two walls meet at a 90-degree angle.

Bow Brackets: These are lights or lanterns fitted with two curved brackets on either side of the lumiere. These lights have been specifically designed for placement above a door or entryway and suspend the central lantern overhead.

FLUSH

Flush-Fix: These are lights or lanterns that have been specifically designed to sit flat against a chosen wall surface once installed. These lights are ideal for placement beside a door or entryway, or fitted to an exterior shed or wall.

Bulkhead: Like flush-fix lights, these are lights or lanterns that have been specifically designed to sit flat against a chosen wall surface once installed. They feature a single curved  pane encased within a bulkhead. These lights are ideal for placement within a garage or shed, or beside a door or entryway.

UPLIGHTERS & DOWNLIGHTERS

Uplighters: These are lights or lanterns that have been designed to filter all light upwards. They are ideal for highlighting and illuminating a specific part of a home or setting. These lights are ideal for placement beside a door or entryway, or on an exterior shed or wall.

Downlighters: These are lights or lanterns that have been designed to filter all light downwards. They are ideal for highlighting and illuminating a specific part of a home or setting. These lights are ideal for placement above or beside a door or entryway, or on an exterior shed or wall.

Both: These are lights or lanterns that have been designed to filter all light upwards and downwards. They often feature a cylindrical or flat design. These lights are ideal for placement beside a door or entryway, or on an exterior shed or wall.

SENSORS & SECURITY

PIR Sensors: These are lights or lanterns that have been fitted with a small electronic device designed to detect movement. A light installed with a PIR sensor will, therefore, automatically switch on when movement is detected within its field. These lights are ideal for placement on an exterior wall where additional security or illumination is required during the darker moments of the day.

Solar: These are lights or lanterns that have been fitted with solar panels, designed to be powered by the sun. These lights are ideal for placement on an exterior wall location that receives a lot of sunlight throughout the day.

PIR Sensor Lights

ADJUSTABLE

Adjustable Features: These are lights or lanterns that have been fitted with an adjustable lumiere that can be manually moved depending on the direction where light projection is required. These lights are ideal for placement in an outdoor area that is well used for entertaining or working, such as a patio or workshop.
