Can I use any fireplace cleaner or polish on my fireplace?

No. Some fireplace surfaces need specialist products, and using the wrong cleaner, polish or treatment could damage the finish or leave the surface looking worse. Abrasive products can be particularly unsuitable for delicate or polished surfaces, while products that are intended for metal, glass, slate, marble, brick or stone should be used on the material they were intended for.

How do you clean cast iron?

Cast iron is a fantastic metal for fireplaces as it’s really durable and can withstand high heat, we use it for so many of our fireplace products. However it can develop a dull, dusty or faded appearance over time, especially if your fireplace is used a lot. A fireplace or grate polish that's designed for cast iron like our Hotspot Black Grate Polish can help to clean the surface and restore its black finish. Remove loose dirt and ash first, then apply the polish sparingly and work it into the surface according to the product’s directions. For cast iron that’s become badly worn or where the original finish has deteriorated, you can use heat resistant paint which can provide another way to refresh the appearance.

How long should I leave fireplace products to cure before using the fire?

Give products such as heat resistant paint, fireplace cement and sealant plenty of time to cure before lighting the fire. Using the fireplace too soon can affect the finish and may cause fumes as the product heats up. It's important to let the product cure fully before putting you put your fireplace back into use.

Can fireplace scratches and damaged areas be repaired?

Minor marks and surface wear around your fireplace can often  be improved with a polish product, while deeper damage may need a repair product or a new finish. Fireplace repair cement can be used for suitable heat exposed repairs, while heat resistant paint can refresh worn metal surfaces such as fire grates. If you have a valuable, decorative or heavily damaged fireplace, make sure the repair is correct for the material and the part of the fireplace you're treating.
