Gorilla Gains Royal Wings

As the Great British Spoon appeal gathers pace and increasing global attention, the British Ironwork Centre has received exciting news of Royal support for the project.

His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, GCVO, has recently returned from his latest engagement in Hanoi, Vietnam, and has turned his attention to the air transport of another precious cargo – namely the British Ironwork Centre’s spectacular Spoon Gorilla sculpture.

Prince Michael, the Honorary Air Marshall of the Royal Air Force, has been liaising through his Equerry with RAF Benson’s 78 Squadron, of whom he is Honorary Air Commodore, and the Centre in Oswestry regarding the transport of the huge structure by military helicopter following its official unveiling, on May 17, to its new home on the banks of the River Thames.

Clive Knowles, M.D. of the British Ironwork Centre said “We’re thrilled and deeply honoured to be working closely with Prince Michael’s RAF team. The logistics and considerations of transporting a sculpture of this scale are immense and we’re grateful to benefit from such specialist knowledge”.

The team will be working together to look at the weight and structure of the sculpture together with the stresses and pressures it will be subjected to during the flight to ensure its safe journey.

The official unveiling, by Uri Geller, will take place at the Centre’s Oswestry headquarters on May 17th.
