Hand-forged items are a beautiful way to add a sense of unique style to your home whilst paying homage to traditional ironmongery methods. Whether you already own an array of hand-forged items or you’ve created a special piece for yourself at one of our Blacksmith Experiences, these perfectly sculpted items will provide you with years of reliable service if treated with the right amount of care!
Due to the inherent nature of the metal, iron doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. However, it will develop a surface rust if exposed to moisture for prolonged periods of time, especially if placed outdoors. This rust will not affect the integrity of the metal and many people do find the aged patina quite attractive but, if you’d like your hand-forged item to remain in ‘like-new’ condition, we recommend maintenance as and when is required.
For hand-forged items kept in-doors, very little maintenance will be required as they are unlikely to be exposed to the outdoor elements. To keep them looking shiny and new, we recommend an occasional wash with warm soapy water. Make sure you take care to dry thoroughly with a clean cloth to avoid any surface rust developing! Additionally, for an added layer of protection, a small amount of beeswax or furniture wax can be applied annually. We do not recommend using any waxed item outdoors.
If you are wanting to place your forged item outdoors, a coat of metal-based paint should be applied to the piece. This paint will need touching up on an annual basis, or as and when is required, to preserve the finish. If you are located near the coast or in an area of high pollution, this touch-up may be required more regularly. If you require further advice, please get in contact with our sales team.
