What is the difference between a coal bucket, coal scuttle and coal hod?

Historically, coal scuttles and hods had slight design distinctions. A scuttle typically had a wide opening and sloping sides, whereas a hod was taller and more upright and often with a handle for carrying. However today, these terms are often used interchangeably. When you're shopping for these products, choose based on the style, design and size you want rather than going on the name of the product alone.

What size coal scuttle do I need?

This depends on how much coal you usually keep beside the fire, and how much space you have around your hearth. A smaller coal scuttle can be a good choice if your space is more limited or if your fire is only used occasionally, while a larger coal bucket or hod is useful if you need to keep more fuel close at hand and want to reduce how often you refill it. It's worth checking the dimensions before choosing to make sure it will fit comfortably where you plan to keep it.

How do I choose a coal bucket or scuttle to suit my fireplace?

The design is worth considering too, as your coal bucket or scuttle will likely be kept on display beside the fireplace. Our range includes traditional as well as more modern designs. Different sizes and finishes will suit a variety of interiors, for example brass and copper can add warmth, while black or stainless steel can give a cleaner and more streamlined look.
