Companion Sets
A companion set brings together the essential tools you need for your fireplace. Most include a poker, tongs, shovel and brush, making it easier to tend the fire, move fuel and clear away ash. At Black Country Metal Works we know what makes a great quality set. Our range has been curated with fifty years of metalworking experience in mind.
What does a companion set contain?
Companion sets generally contain three or four fire tools, with a dedicated rack to keep them organised. They can include a poker to stoke the fire and rearrange logs, along with tongs to safely grip and reposition or move fuel and embers. A dustpan and brush can sweep up ash once it's cooled so you can keep the fireplace neat and tidy.
Are companion sets suitable for both log and coal fires?
Yes, fireplace tool sets are well suited to both log and coal fires, provided they are made from suitable heat resistant materials. Our companion sets are available in a range of materials and finishes, including iron, brass, stainless steel and pewter.
Can I use a companion set while the fire is burning?
Yes, the poker and tongs are designed for tending to a burning fire, but take care when using any fireside tool around heat and flames. The shovel and brush should only be used once ashes and embers have cooled completely. Always keep the handles away from the flames and make sure you have enough reach to tend to the fire without getting too close.
What other fireplace accessories do I need?
A companion set covers the basic tools for tending your fire, but there are plenty of other fireside accessories to consider. You might also need a fire guard, a log holder or a coal bucket. Instead of pokers and tongs, some people prefer to use heat resistant fireside gloves. The guides below have more information about accessories and styling your fireplace.
