Can fire dogs replace a fire grate or basket?

Fire dogs are an alternative way to support a log fire, but they aren't the same as a fire grate or basket. Fire dogs consist of two separate supports with the logs resting between them. A fire grate or basket on the other hand provides a more substantial base (and in the case of a basket) helps contain the fuel. The best choice for you depends on how you want to build and view your fire: fire dogs give you greater flexibility over log placement and a more open view of the fire, while a grate or basket provides more support and containment.

Can you burn coal or smokeless fuel on fire dogs?

You cannot burn coal or smokeless fuel on fire dogs due to the nature of their open design. The supports are for holding larger pieces of wood and allowing air to circulate beneath. If you burn loose mineral fuel, a fire basket which keeps everything contained will be your best bet.

What are fire dogs made from?

Fire dogs are made from metal, with iron, cast iron and brass among the materials traditionally used for fireside supports. Different metals and finishes give you a choice of looks to suit your hearth.
